My artistic practice focuses on exploring the interconnectedness between art, science, and nature. I believe that without a connection to nature, it is challenging for people to grasp the realities of climate change.
I aim to deepen our understanding of natural ecosystems and human activities, shedding light on the innate relationship between the two. Humanity and the environment are interlinked.
Through my work, I challenge individuals to look beyond the surface of the landscape, urging them to consider the smaller details that reflect broader environmental changes. For example, I focus on the prevalence of lichens, mosses and ferns, highlighting their significance as indicators of air quality and environmental health. By portraying places like Wistman’s Wood, Dartmoor, not merely as beauty spots but as scientific and research-rich environments, I aim to encourage a more profound understanding of the ecological intricacies at play.
I started my exploration of Wistman’s wood with drawings of the lichen and mosses that thrive in this unique environment. It is ancient woodland, a temperate rainforest, approximately 400 metres above sea level. The air is pure and the lack of pollution allows the lichens and ferns to grow.
