Statement
I was born in Lancashire and studied Fine Art at Goldsmith’s College London graduating with a BA Hons in 1987.
I have been exhibited in Salford Gallery, Manchester City Gallery, Doncaster Gallery and Bury Gallery. I have been shortlisted for the BP Portrait exhibition in 2018 and the Threadneedle exhibition 2018. I 2019 I was shortlisted for the BP Portrait exhibition and RSP. I was exhibited as part of the Scottish Portrait awards Exhibition with the piece “Choices” and in 2020 had two pieces chosen once again for the Scottish Portrait awards “ This Is Going To Hurt “ and “ Portrait of artist and Mother ”. and a further piece was selected in 2021. I have exhibited in Aberdeen art gallery 2022 and SRA.
I took part in the Sky portrait of the year in 2019.
Time is an important element in all my paintings. Composition and viewpoint are important elements adding to the idea of a none static subject matter. Emotional connection is a vital element.
I interested demonstrating the universal through the particular. My subject matter deals with universal topics and the exploration of character in the context of circumstance etc. As a female artist I have access to a female world I tend to look at issues and subject matter which has been historically neglected. Relationships and emotional pulls. Mothers and Daughters and the play of power. Aging and ageism.
I hesitate to mention this but as one of my latest subject matters is teaching; I have taught art for 25 years. Within western society teachers have lost their bernine association as the statement of “those who can do, those who can’t teach “has come to define and dismiss them. This despite the historical evidence that says that the best artists of the past ran studios with students and apprentices learning their trade passing on their skills and culture.
i took part in the Wales 56 group touring exhibition “ at Cross Purposes “ exhibiting in Wales and Ireland paired with fellow artist Peter Spriggs to share discussions over a year and have these published .
I have this year exhibited with the society of women’s artists and the first women’s art fair.
