I often think that a landscape painting is lacking real dept. This makes me want to create that distance. To do this I cut and layer card using just a scalpel and glue. Very occasionally I will add a splash of acrylic to add an impression of light, but mostly my Sculpted Landscapes are carved, scraped and torn. I live in beautiful Dorset which is packed full of coast and countryside inspirational jewels.
Jenny Penney was born in Ireland and has now lived most of her life in Dorset. The 25 years she spent working in its countryside, totally inspired her to produce semi abstract iconic landscapes that pop out of the frame. She has exhibited her work throughout Dorset both as an invitee and at her own annual exhibitions. She started showing her work in 1996. Her husband encouraged her to get out and paint when she broke her foot and was struggling about on crutches. She managed to get up to the top of Eggardon Hill and paint the magnificent view. That was the start of sculpting in her way. She often used her hands to push the paint into shapes and was inspired by other painters impasto techniques. Over the years she developed her own style in drawing with pencils and inks and with these initial pictures, she now creates what she calls her Relief Sculpted Landscapes. It is a quiet contrast to a time when she experimented with metal sculpture at Art College and far more acceptable to the neighbours!
